Rumors of Windows 12 have flooded the web following Microsoft’s hints about a major announcement. Many believed a brand-new operating system was imminent, especially after Windows 10 officially reached its end of life. However, the real news is less about a full OS overhaul and more about how Microsoft is evolving Windows with AI at its core.

The big reveal? Microsoft has introduced a new voice mode for Copilot, allowing users to simply say “Hey Copilot” to activate the AI assistant. The phrase might sound familiar—it’s a modern revival of “Hey Cortana” from the Windows 10 era. This time, though, it’s powered by far more advanced artificial intelligence designed to simplify how you interact with your PC.

Goodbye Cortana, Hello Copilot

When Windows 10 debuted in 2015, Cortana was Microsoft’s ambitious step into virtual assistance. Yet, it quickly became infamous for being unreliable and was eventually phased out. Now, Copilot brings back that hands-free experience—only smarter, faster, and integrated directly into the Windows 11 environment.

With “Hey Copilot”, users can execute commands, ask questions, or create content without typing. The AI understands natural language better than any previous Microsoft assistant, reducing the frustration of crafting perfect prompts and allowing for more conversational control.

Agentic AI Comes to the Desktop

Beyond the new wake word, Microsoft is expanding Copilot’s capabilities with a feature called Copilot Actions. This “agentic AI” can perform tasks automatically—like organizing files, drafting documents, or sending emails—without the user needing to micromanage every step. Initially launching through Copilot Labs for Windows Insiders, it’s expected to roll out broadly in 2025.

These AI-driven tools will live inside Windows 11 itself, not just the browser. Think of it as having a digital coworker embedded in your system—handling repetitive work while you focus on creative or strategic tasks.

Security and Privacy Still a Priority

Naturally, delegating tasks to AI raises privacy concerns. Microsoft says Copilot Actions will run under restricted “agent accounts” with limited privileges. Users must explicitly approve major changes, and the AI will only have access to designated folders like Documents, Downloads, and Pictures unless additional permissions are granted.

Standard Windows security mechanisms like access control lists (ACLs) remain in place to block unauthorized actions, while users will have tools to monitor and override AI behavior in real time.

Manus AI Joins File Explorer

In another twist, Microsoft is integrating a separate assistant called Manus AI directly into File Explorer. Its purpose is to handle “complex creative tasks.” For example, selecting a few files and images and asking Manus to “create a website” could generate an entire webpage using the Model Context Protocol to identify and compile the right assets automatically.

Microsoft’s AI Vision Expands

With Copilot Vision and full desktop-level AI control, Microsoft is moving steadily toward an intelligent Windows experience that understands user intent. While some users feel overwhelmed by constant AI integrations, others see this as the natural next step toward productivity automation.

So, while we’re not quite getting Windows 12 yet, Microsoft is clearly building the foundation for it—one where AI is seamlessly woven into every layer of the operating system. The focus may not be on a brand-new version number, but on transforming how Windows thinks, listens, and works for you.
