Avoid breaking your computer for now—seriously. Microsoft needs time to resolve a major glitch in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) that’s currently preventing USB keyboards and mice from working.

The issue began after a Windows 11 update released on October 14, 2025, which unexpectedly disabled USB input support inside WinRE. In short, if your system fails and you try to use recovery mode, your keyboard and mouse may stop responding—leaving you stuck.

Microsoft confirms the problem

On October 17, 2025, Microsoft acknowledged that a recent security update caused a bug where “USB devices, such as keyboards and mice, do not function in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).” Without USB input, navigating or performing recovery actions becomes nearly impossible, making system repair a major challenge.

Failed fixes so far

According to PC World, Microsoft has already pushed out two recovery-related updates, but neither successfully resolved the issue. That means anyone who needs to use WinRE right now may face serious delays or be unable to recover their system at all.

If you haven’t yet installed Windows security update KB5066835, hold off until Microsoft releases a working fix.

Temporary workaround — but it’s limited

There is one potential workaround: using an old PS/2 keyboard or mouse. However, this only works if your motherboard includes a PS/2 port and you still have compatible hardware lying around. Since USB has become the standard for peripherals, this option won’t help most users.

Until Microsoft rolls out a permanent patch, avoid doing anything that might crash or corrupt your Windows installation. Repairing it could be a serious hassle right now, even for experienced users.
