OREM, Utah (Sept. 12, 2025) — Federal authorities are requesting public assistance in identifying a person of interest connected to the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has provided a tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI and a portal for digital submissions of relevant information.
According to an internal law enforcement bulletin, the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting was an imported .30-06 caliber Mauser bolt-action rifle. The firearm was recovered in a wooded area near the campus where the suspect fled after the attack. Investigators confirmed that the rifle contained ammunition engraved with expressions referencing transgender and antifascist ideology. One spent cartridge remained chambered, while three unspent rounds were found in the magazine. The rifle was wrapped in a towel at the time of recovery.
Officials confirmed that the FBI has secured clear surveillance images of the suspect, though these have not been released publicly. The bureau has tracked portions of the suspect’s movements, including a leap from a rooftop before fleeing into a residential area. The suspect is described as appearing to be of college age. Forensic teams have collected a footwear impression, a palm print, and forearm imprints for further analysis.
During a press briefing, Utah Department of Public Safety official Beau Mason and FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Bohls emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and that the suspect is still at large. Bohls confirmed that the firearm and ammunition have been submitted for DNA and fingerprint testing, with plans to disassemble the weapon to gather importer and manufacturing details.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the shooting occurred shortly after Kirk engaged with a student on the subject of violence involving transgender individuals. Witnesses indicated the possibility of multiple people being involved, though this has not been confirmed by investigators.
A report from the Wall Street Journal corroborated earlier accounts that ammunition inside the rifle carried engravings aligned with transgender and antifascist ideology. The rifle, described as an older-model hunting firearm, matched the route of escape taken by the suspect.
At the time of the incident, Charlie Kirk, 31, was participating in the “American Comeback Tour” event at Utah Valley University. Surveillance footage reviewed by authorities shows the shooter firing from an elevated position on a rooftop of an adjacent campus building before fleeing on foot.
Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, ATF, and Utah State Bureau of Investigation, are coordinating efforts in the manhunt. Multiple individuals have been questioned or detained based on eyewitness testimony and video evidence, though the primary suspect has not yet been identified.
The investigation remains active, and further updates are expected as forensic analysis and leads progress.
