South Korea kicked off their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in impressive fashion, overcoming a second-half deficit to defeat Czechia 2-1 at Guadalajara Stadium and continue their strong record against European opposition on football’s biggest stage.

Despite dominating much of the opening half, the Taeguk Warriors struggled to break through a resilient Czech defense and an inspired performance from goalkeeper Matej Kovar.

South Korea created several promising opportunities before halftime. Lee Kangin tested Kovar with a powerful strike in the 14th minute, while captain Son Heungmin came close on multiple occasions but failed to find the target. The Tottenham star also missed a late first-half chance as Czechia survived sustained pressure.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Son again denied by Kovar in the 56th minute. However, it was Czechia who unexpectedly struck first just three minutes later.

Captain Ladislav Krejci rose highest to meet a long throw from Vladimir Coufal, powering a header past goalkeeper Kim Seunggyu to give the Europeans a surprise 1-0 lead against the run of play.

South Korea responded with determination and quickly found their equalizer in the 67th minute. Hwang Inbeom produced a moment of quality, cutting inside before delicately lifting the ball into the net after receiving an excellent through pass from Lee Kangin.

With momentum firmly on their side, the Koreans completed the comeback ten minutes from time. Hwang once again played a decisive role, delivering a dangerous low cross from the right that Oh Hyeongyu calmly converted to make it 2-1.

Czechia pushed forward in search of a late equalizer, but South Korea’s defense held firm. Their best chance arrived in the 82nd minute when Adam Hlozek unleashed a powerful effort, only for Kim Seunggyu to produce a spectacular save and preserve his side’s advantage.

The victory marks South Korea’s third consecutive World Cup triumph against European opposition, following memorable wins over Portugal in Qatar 2022 and Germany at Russia 2018.

## Historic Goal Ends Czechia's Long Wait

Although Czechia ultimately fell short, Krejci’s goal carried historical significance. The header ended the nation’s nearly 20-year wait for a World Cup goal. Their previous strike at the tournament came on 12 June 2006, when Tomas Rosicky scored in a 3-0 group-stage victory over the United States.

## Reactions After the Match

South Korea head coach Hong Myungbo praised his players for their resilience and fighting spirit after falling behind.

“It was a very difficult opening match. Of course, I’m happy with the victory, but what pleased me most was the way the players refused to give up. Even after conceding, I believed we had the quality to win. Now our focus turns to Mexico, and we will use the coming days to prepare thoroughly.”

Match-winner Oh Hyeongyu revealed he had battled illness before the game and was uncertain whether he would even be available.

“I can’t describe my emotions right now. My temperature reached 38 degrees today because I wasn’t feeling well. There was a moment when I wasn’t sure I could play. Thanks to the support of our medical staff and team personnel, I was able to help the team.”

Meanwhile, Czech captain Ladislav Krejci emphasized the importance of adapting to the team’s tactical system despite the disappointing result.

“We are still adjusting to our tactical approach. It’s also our first World Cup in many years, so nerves are naturally part of the experience. Defensively, we need to remain compact and make it as difficult as possible for opponents to create chances against us.”

With three valuable points secured, South Korea have taken an important first step toward the knockout stages and will carry significant momentum into their upcoming clash with Mexico.
